Claremont Middle School is a hundred year old public middle school campus in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland. The former cafeteria on the campus was destroyed in an arson incident approx. 7 years ago. The campus currently has been using a double trailer as a cafeteria. The new MPR building will be a cafeteria, a full size basketball court, and provide a stage area for performing arts and other school assemblies. There are 2 vertical lift doors that open up the rear of the stage to an outdoor stair / ramp / seating area. The building is designed to be open air for most of the year, with ceiling fans and a radiant slab that functions to both heat and cool the space. When there are high smoke days, its also designed to be closed with a high filtration ventilation system.
This new building has an EUI of 17.6 kBtu / SF / year, and is going to have a CHPS Designed level of sustainability features. Studio 144 Architects provided Sustainabilty design / direction along with the associate architect role.
