Hayes Valley South Apartments in San Francisco is an existing 8 building, 110 unit affordable public housing complex. Hayes Valley North Apartments, its companion project is a 7 building, 68 unit affordable public housing complex, both of which underwent a large scale renovation through the MOH-RAD Phase 4 program Studio 144 & Studio Perez were hired for the FF&E portion by McCormack Baron Salazar Developers to provide interior finishes and furniture design the community spaces of the development. Levy Design Partners was the prime architect of the renovation of the complex overall.
Studio 144 & Studio Perez held several rounds of client and user group feedback and information gathering sessions to find design solutions for the spaces that reflected the needs of the programs already on site. At Hayes North there was a converted 2 bedroom unit that now functions as the after-school program location providing a safe space for the resident children after school and space to do homework and learn life skills like some cooking. Part of this project was a large community room with kitchen which needed to function for all kinds of gatherings. The property management and resident services offices, along with their meeting and waiting rooms.
On all of the spaces we designed interiors for, our team procured the furniture and did the design and procurement of the new artwork in the spaces. Our artwork procurement on this project brought in artwork from 10 local Bay Area and California based artists. Proudly, all the office chairs are the Humanscale Smart Ocean chair, a product that uses recycled ocean fishing nets for the plastics, and is a Living Product Challenge Product. Last photo shows what the space was like before our design was implemented.
Samclar office furniture was the distributor for the project.
