This project was a focused on security for a senior apartment building at the edge of Chinatown and Nob Hill neighborhoods in San Francisco. This remodel also needed to work with the heavy use and historic façade for the building. The new gate and its fixed panels provide a place for the intercom system to attach to and it provides a space for packages and mail to be secured in the exterior vestibule for the building. It being recessed allows the seniors a place to wait for rides or get out of the elements while getting in the door.
The design evokes detailing on the historic stamped concrete façade without matching exactly. The design also casts playful lacy shadows into the exterior vestibule as the western exposure sunlight streams through.
